The photo is from Hala, Sindh and it is an advertisement banner for an educational institute called ‘Benazir English Learning Center’. I think the school management has carefully chosen the name to get free marketing points. The name ‘Benazir’ literally means ‘unique / one of a kind’. The banner is in Sindhi. I’ll translate its readable contents below.

The banner reads as follows:

Memon Foundation Grammar School
United Memon Party, Hala

BENAZIR ENGLISH LEARNING CENTER

After successful completion of ‘First Group’, admissions are now open in ‘Second Group’.

In this regard, we have acquired services of the “Award Holder” teacher, Maqbool Ahmed Memon, M.A, MEd.

Muhtarmah’s name should not be miss-used. Attracting market through a “woman” leader’s name, is not good.

Every one must care about the respect of women in our culture and religion and must not be written on walls, banners, etc.

    I hope you all understand.

    Very creative!

I have seen the name used on a variety of different things.

The used to be a fairly popular Benazir Kulfa shop in liberty market in Lahore beside the flower vendors. I don’t know if it is still there.

Given the fact that she was a highly effective english speaker, not a bad choice for english learning center :)

I thought so too that the school management has very cleverly chosen the name. It sells by itself -atleast in Sindh province – and if anyone accuses them of cheap publicity then they can claim the word ‘benazir’ means ‘unique’ and that is why they chose it.

When I first saw this photo, I was amused by the banner and that is why I chose to share it here. I know it is just a trivial snap shot of Pakistan’s street life but it brought smile to me :)

Sometimes it takes just a light hearted smile to solve bigger problems and see things clearly.

Seems like the PPP is not the only party trying to capitalize on the Benazir brand!
