Owais Mughal

Few days ago we presented this photo as an ATP photo quiz. Quite a few of our readers guessed it right. This jewellery set was presented to US’ First Lady Jackie Kennedy by then President of Pakistan, Ayub Khan on her visit to Pakistan in March 1962.

This jewellery set is nowadays at display in John F. Kennedy Presidential Library and Museum in Boston Massachussets. Following is the enlarged view of the sign describing this set.

Back in June 2006, one of the first ATP Quiz’s was also related to Jackie Kennedy’s memorable trip to Pakistan in 1962. The photograph we had used then is reproduced here.

That visit was, in fact, quite a diplomatic event for both the US and certainly for Pakistan.

Maybe, given all of President Obama’s interest in Pakistan, it is time for Michelle Obama to visit Pakistan now!

The recent listing and publishing of gifts received by the last PM draws an apt comparison with what Jackie K received.

These gifts are Never personal at that level of National visitors and remain forever a part of the national treasures.

Disgrcefully, generations of our so-called “Leaders” have pocketed them outright OR when responding to some pang of conscience, taken them over for pittance.

I have not seen Anywhere or By Anyone – including our worthy Investigative Reporters – the real question to be asked:
When these same “Leaders” give reciprocal gifts during their state visits to other countries, do they pay for them from their own pockets??????????

IF YES, then it becomes an exchange of personal gifts!!!!!!!!!

Aziz sb, you are right my bad :) The book had Jackie’s India and Pakistan tours described on the same page so in my ‘aalam-e-junoon’ I forgot to pay attention to where India’s tour ended and where Pakistan’s tour started. Fatehpur Sekri is in India. The people diving from 200ft into a small pond is a correct narrative though.

This post also highlights that in civilized democracies, the expensive gifts that the leaders receive are bequeathed to museums and libraries, and are not pocketed.

Owais: Isn’t Fatehpur sikri in India?

I recently got chance to read one of the Jackie Kennedy’s biographies. While recalling her Pakistan trip in March of 1962, one show that was officially put up for her was the diving of men from 200 feet height into a small and shallow pool of water in the village of Fatehpur Sekri. One of the members of visiting delegation (which was Jackie’s sisiter Princess Lee Radzi) got stuck in traffic rush and couldn’t make up on time to see the diving show, so on Jackie’s request the whole diving show was repeated. This was just one interesting episode from her trip to Pak.
