Owais Mughal

Few days ago we presented this photo as an ATP photo quiz. Quite a few of our readers guessed it right. This jewellery set was presented to US’ First Lady Jackie Kennedy by then President of Pakistan, Ayub Khan on her visit to Pakistan in March 1962.

This jewellery set is nowadays at display in John F. Kennedy Presidential Library and Museum in Boston Massachussets. Following is the enlarged view of the sign describing this set.

Back in June 2006, one of the first ATP Quiz’s was also related to Jackie Kennedy’s memorable trip to Pakistan in 1962. The photograph we had used then is reproduced here.

That visit was, in fact, quite a diplomatic event for both the US and certainly for Pakistan.

Maybe, given all of President Obama’s interest in Pakistan, it is time for Michelle Obama to visit Pakistan now!

  1. Some comments posted at the ATP Facebook Page:

    – “this is true pakistaniat :)”
    – “Great picture. I didnt even know that she had ever visited Pakistan. Great post.”
    – “didn’t she have security problems, or did hey shut whole pakistan for her at that time too.”
    – “wow ,,, i guess its a pride for all of us that its still in their museum \m/”

Yes, the Kennedy administration saw Pakistan as their doorway to the Middle East. Back then their understanding of the Middle East was very little compared to what it is today, so they decided to rely on Pakistan to build their relationship with the ME.
Don’t forget “Sardar,” the horse that Ayub presented to Jackie Kennedy which the White House had to make an exception to their policy to accept. The White House cannot accept gifts from foreign governments worth over a certain dollar amount, but given Jackie’s love of horses and the fear of offending their new friend, Pakistan, they accepted the horse.

They cant sit properly on camel…because of skirt lol

  4. Gardezi says:

Given the recent scandal about Shaukat Aziz and Musharraf not returning some of the gifts given to them officially while in office (or buying them for peanuts) here is a good reminder of how things should be done.

Reflects well on the Kennedy’s and also for Pakistan since visitors to the museum now get to see this.

  5. ASAD says:

Nice. Love the old picture of Jacquiline Kennedy on the camel. Wish we were still showing this face of Pakistan to visitors.

By the way, agree that a trip by Michelle Obama will do wonders for US-Pakistan relations on both sides.
