Higher Education Commission (HEC) of Pakistan has recently released the university rankings of Pakistan. The rankings are generating so much interest that I am receivng four to five emails daily with people forwarding me the same link to HEC’s ranking web page. (Scroll down to see rankings and details).
I am kind of disappointed with my alma-mater, NED University of Engineering and Technology Karachi, ranked at number 10 out of the 13 Engineering Universities of Pakistan. The photo to the right-below shows few views of NED University.
I genuinely and of course with a little bias think that NED university should’ve been ranked among the top 3. When I make such claim; I do it on the basis of sheer engineering talent I’ve personally seen at NED. But rankings do not take into account the student talent. They look at finances, faculty, number of studetns etc. My university mates as well as the university officials have already started the discussion on how to improve the rankings next year. This discussion is going on at many NED online alumni groups. I am sure similar discussions are going on within other university alumni too. This I think, is a positive sign of publishing a list like this as it does create competition.

After reading the reply from Mr. Ahmed, I now concur that the rank list was furnished in a good spirit. Insha-Allah, in the future, the ranking should focus more and more on scientific discovery and the schools contribution to the society as a whole.
Universities should also be judged by the caliber of their faculty training, ranking of their incoming class, and places where their graduates find jobs. In this spirit, the universities will also compete to get the best and most serious students from the applicant pool. They will also focus more on the strengths of their curriculum, experience of their faculty and leadership of their administration.
This ranking system, will one day insha-Allah, revolutionize the attitudes and cultivate a spirit of teaching and innovation while bringing pride and a sense of purpose back to our education system. This will, undeniably, nurture and groom our future educators, health care professionals, lawyer, engineers and beyond.
In short, I believe this is a good start and we should commend the HEC for their efforts.

I think all the universities deserve to this .its ot the matter of well& good. for us its a matter that either the univeristy is giving the admission to all. or the seats are so much sufficient. if a qenerl peron is not allowed then 4 us its n matter that who’s on top.
no matter wat faculty or whatever facilities iqra is providing am not sure why is it ranked far better than the institute of business management… iobm is providing the pakistani industry with far better entrepreneurs and leaders.
this seems quiet biased hec better look at the market demand of degree holders of different institutes as well and there you will find the real answer…
It is good that HEC has started ranking universities but HEC should take care about other issues also as in ranking published papers play vital role and some vice chancellors are forcing their teachers to publish papers and started giving premium on each publication. Most of the teachers have started publishing papers by getting (8-10 years) old thesis from librries and from different sources and making papers out of them. Measures should be taken to criticize such things. Some teachers have diverted their attention from teaching to paper publications and are not paying attention to deliver proper lectures to students particularly in new universities. Because they know that publication will count in his credit for promotion not good teaching.
hey i think all the universities got the position that they deserved… but i cant accpet nust at 2nd position….. NED is better then nust all the way…i myself as an engineering student accpets the results displayed.. but NUST………………………………………….. !!
AoA — I’m surprised to see that NEDUET, Karachi couldn’t make it to the top 5 engineering schools in Pakistan.
