Adil Najam

After an intense, and sometimes tense, debate in Parliament, Asif Ali Zardari’s government has now promulgated the ‘Nizam-e-Adl’ regulation in Swat. The deal is now official. In this ATP Poll, we would like to ask you if you think that this deal will still be standing in 3 month’s time and, whether it would or not, who (government or Taliban) would be stronger?

There are, of course, other questions related to the Nizam i Adl deal. For example, will this spur more demands from other areas for similar regulations? Will this actally bring peace and justice to Malakand? What form of Shariah will actually be implemented? What effect will this deal have on the ruling coalition itself?

These, and other questions may not be part of the Poll – which focusses only on whether the deal will last 3 months and who will emerge stronger out of this at the 3-month mark. However, we hope that readers will discuss these – and any other – larger questions about just what the implications of this Nizam-i-Adl deal will be on Swat and all over Pakistan.

What stinks is that the govt has surrendered to their guns and violence. This is the place where an Army action should be done. I am sure the Indians just love this and are secretly supporting and providing arms to these Talibans. And then when they start biting them they will crib about Pakistan. We in Pakistan have learnt the same lesson the hard way and now others are falling for it. I think Amry should launch a massive cleanup operation and clear this filth from Pakistan.

This horrendous deal is not only a failure of our politicians but also of our Army. Why is Kiani not fighting these enemies. There is no greater threat to our security than these Taliban and they have already captured Pakistan territory. The Army is also answerable here for this surrender.

@walking_by: Anyone saying that it will be Pakistani forces who will get rid of taliban either lives in America or in other foreign country. And people living abroad have no idea how incapable Pakistan Army is. You guys are sitting warm in america drinking hot chocolate while we are burning in hell here.

I think the Swat deal will not work but the Taliban win nonetheless. Now they will ask for this Nizam-e-Jahalat in more parts of Pakistan. Folks, this is a battle for Pakistan’s soul and we are loving it to these jahils and their barbaric behavior.

@Enlightener: If at all the Taliban can be wiped out by a military force, it will have to be a *Pakistani* force. Not an international force or even an international Muslim force.

Third party intervention in a civil war usually serves to briefly unite the warring factions against external intervention and prolong the misery. The original lessons learned are lost and the wound is reopened after the interventionists leave. And frankly, no one likes to see foreign boots on their soil for long intervals, however well intentioned they are.

Look at what happened when the IPKF landed in Sri Lanka. India learned some tough lessons, lost a national leader and yet made no notable change in the status quo. The tide has now begun to turn but only after the *Sri Lankans* took determined civil and military action to end the war.
