Owais Mughal

Higher Education Commission (HEC) of Pakistan has recently released the university rankings of Pakistan. The rankings are generating so much interest that I am receiving four to five emails daily with people forwarding me the same link to HEC’s ranking web page. (Scroll down to see rankings and details).

I am kind of disappointed with my alma-mater, NED University of Engineering and Technology Karachi, ranked at number 10 out of the 13 Engineering Universities of Pakistan. The photo to the right-below shows few views of NED University.

I genuinely and of course with a little bias think that NED university should have been ranked among the top 3. When I make such claim; I do it on the basis of sheer engineering talent I’ve personally seen at NED. But rankings do not take into account the student talent. They look at finances, faculty, number of students etc. My university mates as well as the university officials have already started the discussion on how to improve the rankings next year. This discussion is going on at many NED online alumni groups. I am sure similar discussions are going on within other university alumni too. This I think, is a positive sign of publishing a list like this as it does create competition.

Everytime I click on this topic an ad comes up on my screen. I have to go back and click again. So probably it counts it as two clicks and not as one. Probably that is the reason behind such a high number of hits. Otherwise we can safely assume that the independent hits were just around 25,000.

This post has recently crossed the 50000 hits mark in roughly 16 months since it was published. It is also the first one to do so at ATP. This shows a big need of career counselling in Pakistan’s teenagers coming out of HSC. Looks like there is a genuine need of a ranking system where prospective students can compare the universities they are applying to.

  3. Nauman Mustafa says:

I guess there can be two separate University ranking systems.

    1. based on this existing criteria with some fine tuning

    2. based on talent pool that they generate.

and I agree that (2) does not necessarily depend on ( 1), although it does help.

NED is a perfect example where they may not be ranked 1, but they do produce top talent and hence must be ranked 1 in this category.

They however need to improve on facilities, faculty, research and especially to bring their curriculum up to date.

  4. Vitayaar says:

University ranking? Does it matter one bit? How can any of them be called a university if there is no real research conducted at any of them?

  5. Muhammad Uzair Sukhera says:

Once more bringing forth the suggestion:

why critisize HEC for all this mess? Why dont we represent our own universities here? May be it wud be of some help to newcomers!
