A friend has forwarded me this notice which is wordprocessor printed and taped on top of an elevator (‘Lift’) door, somewhere in a Pakistani building.

The English translation reads:

“ATTENTION: BEFORE ENTERING THE LIFT CHECK WHETHER LIFT IS PRESENT OR NOT!”

This is hilarious enough, but the Urdu message at the top of this translation has one extra sentence which didn’t get translated to English and that is the punch line. A kind of dark comedy. I’ll translate it for our non-Urdu readership. It says:

“Make sure it doesn’t happen that you reach ground floor without an elevator.”

Wise words, indeed!

Well, the picture was very funny and cheered up my morning until I got to Bilal’s comment, which was very tragic. Sorry to hear about that Bilal. But, the sign was still funny. Thanks for the post.

  2. hahaha this must have been placed outside my house’s neighbouring building!

  3. After reading Bilal Zuberi’s comment, the sign is hillarious but not meaningless. It provides funny to people living in Euprope but people living in third world countries needs these kinds of signs where very old technology is still being used.

  4. Bilal Zuberi says:

Not in Pakistan, but in Amma, jordan, a friend’s relative died last year when he entered an elevator (lift) without looking inside. The door opened without the elevator present on the other side and by the time he realized, he had already taken the first step and it was too late to pull back. Very sad.

Behind the Indian consulate in Karachi there are also apartment buildings that have a pre-war era (or seems like it) elevator and I remember opening the door once to realize there was no elevator on the other side.

  5. Priceless! There should be concentrated effort to make a collection of these sort of signs… perhaps we can ask people to contribute more. Part and parcel of the Pakistani heritage I might add,

This one is just unbelievably cheeky and totally Pakistani sense of humour
