Geo TV Pakistan Shutting DownNews is that GEO Network is closing down. I hope the news is a false alarm, but I am told that this has been announced on Geo TV itself. An email making the rounds from someone at GEO itself reads:

At this moment we here at Geo are extremely SAD as Geo network is forced to shut down due to Govt pressure on UAE our base country.
Insha Allah we will fight. We are proud that the management of Jang Group never made compromise and prefer to fight till death.

I would rather wait to hear more details and to see reaction to this from the government, from the people of Pakistan and also the rest of the world before I comment in detail. But my first reaction is, yet again, one of disgust. The things that we coudl have been most proud of in recent years and months – an assertive judiciary, a free media – are being snatched away one by one. I hope it turns out not to be so. But if so, then who next?

Original Post (Nov. 4, 2007):
The emergency declared by Gen. Pervez Musharraf yesterday was not surprising. But that does not make it any less disturbing. Amongst the many unspeakable actions that have resulted from this is a clampdown on the media, especially the electronic news media. In response, GEO News has made the audio stream of its transmissions available on line.

Janab WASIM ARIF sahib, bohat ho gaya, abb bass bhi karo. Aik he URL bar bar, bar bar…. how many thousand of times have youput the ghissa pitta URL to teh same stuff. Jis nay wahan janna tha, ja chuka. This is realy against internet ettiquette and decency. You are just fishing for visits to your site by putting this link here again and again and again and again. Why don’t you put decent stuff on your site and people will come themselves. Please stop this!

i totally disagree with the view that emergency is the result of media s irresponssible attitude.the media has shown us which in reality happens.now from yesterday,we just cut off the latest updates since media is off air especially GEO AND ARY.all what happened n what is going to be happened in our countary is a well thought plan and who is the master planner is very much known by the nation.at this moment i just request the all pakistanis to be patient and united in the right path n pray Allah to forgive us n bless this nation(amin)

  4. Shehzad Bhai,

I fundamentally disagree with what you have said as above. You can moan at the anchors and how they work but can you name just one example when Hamid Mir or anyone else did not inform, what was the bakwas and why has it taken a nudge from Mush via his emergency to remind you of this crime. The simple fact is that the media by and large have done a sterling job in highlighting and informing the nation of our fundamental rights , and about time I say, so lets condemn this action and resist it, not support it bhai.

Instead I invite you listen to my call to the nation to say as one nation martial law is NOT IN MY NAME, see link here http://www.otherpakistan.org/archive.html

For the first time in my life I feel transported back to the good ol’days of Islamabad when PTV was king of the boob tube. Although I am kinda glad that I do not have to subscribe or listen for sometime to the bakwaas of the likes of Hamid Mir, Iftikhar from GEO and Javed Malik from ARY ONE! In the last few months I was indeed feeling that these channels in particular were going beyond the call of their mandate to inform people. GEO was certainly becoming like FOX NEWS and instead of reporting unbiased, they were actually passing judgments on the character of Pakistan. The journalistic ethics were out of the window and essentially it all was who gets more viewership even if the anchor’s had t show their own dead relatives on screen! ARY ONE was not too far behind in its ‘dum hilao’ commentary and allegiance to PPP and PML (N). However high marks to DAWN TV and AAJ who have indeed kept their balanced composure in the face of adversity and front-line reporting.

The credit of this emeergency also squarely rests on the shoulder of irresponsible media of Pakistan in particular with GEO and ARY ONE.
