Dear Readers,
While All Things Pakistan has remained alive and online, it has been dormant since June 11, 2011 - when, on the blog's 5th anniversary, we decided that it was time to move on. We have been heartened by your messages and the fact that a steady traffic has continued to enjoy the archived content on ATP. While the blog itself will remain dormant, we are now beginning to add occasional (but infrequent) new material by the original authors of the blog, mostly to archive what they may now publish elsewhere. We will also be updating older posts to make sure that new readers who stumble onto this site still find it useful.
We hope you will continue to find ATP a useful venue to reflect upon and express your Pakistaniat. - Editors
Long time ago our neighbors in Pak rented their house to a national brand pickle manufacturer. This company used to drain all the spicy pickle oil and who-knows-how old pickles in the residential sewage system. Since the system was not designed to handle industrial sewage it used to get clogged every now and then. Metropolitan corporation people (was called KMC in those days) used to bring human cleaners like the one shown in this post above. These brave men would jump into the sewerage and unclog it by hand but because of heavily pickled sewage they sometime used to shout and cry in agony of feeling spices in their eyes and noses. It used to be a humbling scene to see humanity degraded to such level. Bringing awareness to this practise in our municipalities is also a reason of my post above. Yes we are a poor country but making sewage system cleaned by automated tools (water pressure, pneumatic, mechanical etc ) is the need of the hour.
People are desperate to get jobs to put food on their table,as such this brave is man is ready to do anything in order to be accommodated in that organization ,his job is important and gets the sewerage moving across the locality. In western countries these are city government unionized jobs with full benefits and handsome salary, unfortunately this is not the case there.
In any case protective gear should be provided to these people.
