From the very first post on this blog, Faiz Ahmed Faiz and his poetry has been a muse, a mentor, a monument, and a mirror to our thoughts, our wishes, our hopes and sometimes also our fears. In our posts, and also in the comments from our readers, probably no personality has been evoked more often or more fondly than Faiz Ahmed Faiz.
On this, his centenary birthday, what is the best way to remember Faiz Ahmed Faiz? We can remember his persona and personality, his politics and ideology, his life and times, his music and melody, and so much more. But there can be no greater tribute to a poet than through the power of his own poetry. And that we wish to offer as a tribute today.

Let me get the ball rolling here.
Like many of you, I do not have a single favorite Faiz verse. Different verses play the chords of my sentiments at different times and in different situation. Right now one that is playing constantly in my head, is:
Halqa kee-aye baithay raho iss shammaa ko yaaro
Kuch rooshni baaqi tou hai, har chand kay kumm hai
Do share, dear readers, your favorite Faiz verses. At the very least this can become a special ‘Faiz Edition’ of bait baazi. At best it will become a people’s tribute to a people’s poet.

آج بازار ميں پا بجولاں چلو
چشم ِ نم جان ِ شوريدہ کافي نہيں
تہمت ِ عشق پوشيدہ کافي نہيں
آج بازار ميں پا بجولاں چلو
دست افشاں چلو مست رقصاں چلو
خاک برسر چلو گنگ و داماں چلو
راہ تکتا ہے سب شہر ِ جاناں چلو
آج بازار ميں پا بجولاں چلو
حاکم ِ شہر بھي مجمع ِ عام بھي
تير ِ الزام بھي سنگ ِ دشنام بھي
صبح ِ ناشاد بھي روز ِ ناکام بھي
آج بازار ميں پا بجولاں چلو
ان کا دم ساز اپنے سوا کون ہے
شہر ِ جاناں ميں اب با سپا کون ہے
دست ِ قاتل کے شاياں رہا کون ہے
رخت ِ دل باندھ لو دل فگارو چلو
پھر ہمي قتل ہوں آئيں يارو چلو
آج بازار ميں پا بجولاں چلو
آ کھ وابستہ ہے اس حسن کي ياديں تجھ سے
آ کھ وابستہ ہے اس حسن کي ياديں تجھ سے
جس نے اس دل کو پري خانہ بنا رکھا تھا
جس کي الفت ميں بھلا رکھي تھي دنيا ہم نے
دہر کو دہر کا افسانہ بنا رکھا تھا
آشنا ہيں تيرے قدموں سے وہ راہيں جن پر
اسکي مدہوش جواني نے عنايت کي ہے
کارواں گزرے ہيں جن سے اسي رعنائي کے
جس کي ان آنکھوں نے بےسود عبادت کي ہے
تجھ سے کھيلي ہيں وہ محبوب ہوائيں جن ميں
اسکے ملبوس کي افسردہ مہک باقي ہے
تجھ پہ بھي برسا ہے اس بام سے مہتاب کا نور
اور بيتي ہوئي راتوں کي کسک باقي ہے
تونے ديکھي ہيں وہ پيشاني، وہ رخسار، وہ ہونٹ
زندگي جن کے تصور ميں لٹا دي ہم نے
تجھ پہ اٹھي ہيں وہ کھوئي ہوئي ساحر آنکھيں
تجھ کو معلوم ہے کيوں عمر گنوا دي ہم نے
آئے کچھ ابر کچھ شراب آئے
آئے کچھ ابر کچھ شراب آئے
اس کے بعد آئے جو عذاب آئے
بام ِ مينا سے ماہتاب اترے
دست ِ ساقي ميں آفتاب آئے
ہر رگ ِ خوں ميں پھر چراغاں ہو
سامنے پھر وہ بے نقاب آئے
عمر کے ہر ورق پہ دل کو نظر
تيري مہر و وفا کے باب آئے
کر رہا تھا غم ِ جہاں کا حساب
آج تم ياد بے حساب آئے
نہ گئي غم کي سرداري
دل ميں يوں روز انقلاب آئے
جل اٹھے بزم ِ غير کے در و بام
جب بھي ہم خانماں خراب آئے
اس طرح اپني خامشي گونجي
گويا ہر سمت سے جواب آئے
فيض تھي سر بسر منزل
ہم جہاں پہنچے کامياب آئے

varna dunya mein kya nahin baqi
