Adil Najam

It is time, yet again, to request our readers to please grade the performance of the key figures in Pakistan politics. We had asked you to do so in April 2010 and earlier in 2009 (here and here). We had presented the comparison  between these two results here. Given the political twists and turns since then, we think it is time to seek your opinion yet again.

Can you please grade for us the performance of the six power centers in Pakistan: the President, the Prime Minister, the Chief Justice, the Chief of Army, the Leader of the Opposition, and the Media. The focus, once again, is on how you think they have performed in these roles. In this installment of ATP Polls we would like to find out how you grade the performance of those holding key offices in Pakistan: President Asif Ali Zardari, Prime Minister Yousuf Raza Gillani, Chief Justice Iftikhar Chaudhry, Chief of Army Staff Gen. Ashfaq Pervez Kiani, and Opposition Leader Nawaf Sharif. Once again, we have included the Media (as a whole and as an institution) since they also influence Pakistan’s power balance.

I know I am repeating myself (both in this post and from the previous ones), and I also realize that at some level this appeal will be ignored, but do let me say again that the purpose of this exercise is not to see whether you like these people or not, it is to see what how you think they have been performing in the offices they now hold. It is perfectly possible to not particularly like someone but come to the conclusion that they are doing a decent job in what they have been assigned to do, or vice versa. So, please, even though this is just a fun exercise, use your vote justly.

Do also comment on how you think they have been performing, and what aspects of their performance influenced your vote.

After submitting my vote, I was surprised to see the results that shows the exact result in my mind. It means, all Pakistani’s are thinking in a same direction.

We Pakistanis are an ungrateful bunch

If any of us were every to be graded the way we are grading these people in tough jobs I wonder if even one of us would pass. WHAT HAVE *YOU* DONE FOR PAKISTAN LATELY, PEOPLE? Pakistan is the mess it is today because we have failed much more than because of the failures of any of these people.

For those of you who are criticising media must first look at what media is doing elsewhere around the world. It is because of awareness brought about among the masses that the western nations are what they are today.

Do you think that western politicians are not corrupt by nature? it may be true but a strong factor is the existence of powerful media over there sniffing every movement of the officials for any shape of possible corruption.

Its everywhere the same. Pakistan is a relatively young nation and democracy has had a period of of only 1988-1999 and 2008 onwards. (Bhutto regime being no less than a civil martial law). furthermore, with feudal system in control of politics, military top brass, bureaucracy and industry, Pakistan can never have a successful experience of western style democracy. What media is doing is actually shaking the roots of this oppression by feudalists they enjoy on Pakistani society through aforementioned organs of the state.

so i think media is going in right direction, may be some rules need to be refined.

If you are still reluctant to accept the fact the media influences the decisions of the governments, watch the movie “The Queen” (2006) which depicts how the media pressure forced a most stubborn Queen of England to change her stance on Lady Diana’s funeral

The whole movie is available on You Tube. First of ten parts is on the following link

Media is biased and gets ‘F’ from me. because its

    – Biased, The only perfect party is London based Mafia for them, as i have never seen any criticism for it.

    – Irresponsible, its all about breakign the news, no matter how authentic it is, remember Ajmal Kasab.

    – they are too Many :), we have approximately 40 news channels today and 100’s in dailies. oh my God, where is my entertainment hour for the day.

  5. SM says:

Let me remind my brothers and sisters that the question was to rate their performance in their “current position” not their performance in “politics”.

In my opinion, Gen kiyani is a failure as head of the army as he has failed to achieve goals in fata areas. Hence earned a bad name as a ‘general’ and being a ‘fauji’.

Secondly, I think that Zardari is doing great as president in being impartial, and keeping himself away from all the trouble. He is a very intelligent person (though he do not use his intellignece in creativity) :)

The media is a total failure being totally impartial and showing always one side of the picture. Example is their reporting for MQM and their leader.

Guys, think outside the box please. Chills :)
